General Information About Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that stimulates the person's healing resources. It allows symptoms to resolve, rather than suppressing them.

Homeopathy works across the age spectrum, from birth to old age. It is effective in promoting recovery in a wide range of conditions, including physical and emotional trauma, chronic conditions (both physical and mental) and acute conditions.

Homeopathy can help you let go of addictive patterns of behaviour, changing your responses to stress and minimizing your dependency on medication. It can make important and often difficult life transitions such as puberty and menopause easier to navigate.

The initial homeopathic consultation usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The homeopath will make an assessment of your needs as a whole person while also attending to the particular symptoms associated with your condition. This means that your feelings and life situation as well as physical symptoms are taken into account when finding the best remedy for you as an individual.

A single remedy may be prescribed, from a variety of sources in the mineral, animal or plant realms. The homeopath has thousands of remedies to choose from; the process of choosing the correct remedy is very individual and constitutes the art and science of the practice of homeopathy.

Unlike conventional medication, which often needs to be taken for long periods of time, homeopathic remedies are taken very infrequently. They are like lessons which, once learned, do not need to be repeated.

A Brief History of homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which has been used for over 200 years and whose philosophical foundations reach back to the time of Hippocrates (460-370 BC).

Hippocrates, who is also known as the "Father of Medicine," believed that the body had the power to heal itself and that the selection of a treatment should be individualized. He described two different methods of cure - the first, by contraries; the second, by similars.

Treating by contraries means using a treatment method that opposes the symptoms. This approach underlies most of modern medical practice. Treating according to the law of similars is fundamental to the practice of homeopathy.

Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) is the founder of homeopathy. A German physician, chemist, and medical translator, he was discouraged with the harsh, often dangerous medical methods commonly used in his time. He sought to discover a more gentle and effective type of medicine.

Through Hahnemann's work, the ancient principle of "like cures like" was developed into a complete medical system for the first time. He coined the term homeopathy from the Greek roots homeo, which means similar, and pathos, which means suffering. His practical method depended upon experiments called "provings" that revealed the effects of various substances on healthy persons.

During the 19th century, Hahnemann's philosophy spread rapidly across the globe. In Great Britain, homeopathy has enjoyed a long history of support from the royal family. In 1849 England's first homeopathic hospital was founded. During the cholera epidemic of 1854, the death rate at the London Homeopathic hospital was 30% less than in other hospitals.

In present-day England there are several homeopathic hospitals working within the National Health Service, and 42% of British physicians refer patients to homeopathic doctors.

In Canada and the U.S., homeopathy was widely practiced and officially recognized well into the 20th century. In British Columbia, physicians who practiced homeopathy were registered as such with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.

Today over 2000 homeopathic remedies of plant, mineral and animal origin have been proved. These are collected into a body of reference serving as a detailed compilation of the symptoms of each known remedy.

After 200 years of use, homeopathy has an extensive and impressive clinical track record. Its effectiveness has been scientifically established through numerous clinical trials.
